The Audition.

Try to get to your audition about 5 minutes before it is scheduled so that you will have time to fill out our little audition form. This form asks a few questions to help us to get to know you better.

We'll be asking you questions like:

  • Name (starting off easy)

  • Voice part (not so bad)

  • Previous musical experience (not required, we just like to know!)

  • And any other time commitments you have or plan to have

After you have filled out the form, we will call you in and we get to the fun part...

Who am I auditioning in front of?

Everyone auditions in front of the Music Director, Assistant Music Director, Business Manager, Assistant Business Manager, and Member at Large. You can check out our "Members" page to see who we are, we don't bite! We will also be at the Activities Fair during New Student Orientation if you want to come say hello.

What exactly happens in an audition?

There are four main parts to our auditions:

  • Range Check/Pitch Matching

  • Your Solo Song

  • The Prepared Piece (this is provided to you ahead of time and is specific to the Audiophiles)

  • Sight Singing

What should my solo be?

Your solo can be anything you want it to be. There is no required genre or style. Your solo should give us a sense of who you are as a vocalist, so pick something you are confident in!

What is the prepared piece?

The prepared piece is In Dreams from the Lord of the Rings. Please learn the selection included in the pdf. During the audition you will sing the measures with the officers who are in the audition with you. The video includes a recording of four officers singing each part as well as a recordings where one part is omitted each time. Please use these videos to learn the voice part you believe you are.

What is the deal with Sight Singing?

Sight singing helps us to get a feel for how quickly you can pick up a piece of music. This piece is not available ahead of time. We know that sight singing is difficult so don't worry, your solo and the prepared piece factor into the decision much more than sight singing. Just do your best!

What happens if I want to audition for more than one group?

When auditioning for our a cappella groups as WPI, you will be able to sign up for multiple audition times. Each group has slightly different expectations for their auditions, so be sure to reach out to each executive board individually if you are interested in their audition process. You will audition in front of each executive board separately. After you audition, if you have been accepted into a group you will receive an offer which you may choose to accept or decline. If you are auditioning for more than one group, you will only receive one offer from the group you are placed in. Your preference of group has weight in your final placement, so be sure to let us know if the Audiophiles is your first choice during your audition!

Good luck!
