Want to join the Audiophiles?

You’re probably wondering what it’s like to be a part of the group! Here’s some questions that you might be asking before joining.

What’s the time commitment?

The Audiophiles hold rehearsals on Wednesday and Sunday evenings from 8-10pm. Sometimes we have additional rehearsals when we are close to performances. It is expected that you will attend every rehearsal unless a specific conflict arises. In addition to this, you must also fulfill the CA requirement.

What kind of performances do we have? How often?

We have one main show during the year that we put on each year. Our show is usually in B Term (December). There are also a variety of gigs that occur throughout the year. When we compete in the ICCAs, we spend C Term (January - March) preparing choreography and music for that performance specifically. It’s expected that you will attend all performances unless a specific conflict arises.

What’s the CA requirement?

The Audiophiles fall under the Choral Association (CA). Of the five a cappella groups, the Technichords and SHM (Simple Harmonic Motion) also fall under the Choral Association. This means that we receive funding for our show and other expenses from CA.

Because we are a member of CA, all of our members must spend some time as a member of the choirs on campus for their “CA requirement”. This is done in order to support the membership of the other choral groups on campus and help build your technical skills as a vocalist. For tenor and bass voices it is the Glee Club and for soprano and alto voices it is the Alden Voices. Everyone will also be a member of the Festival Choir (mixed choir) during the terms they choose to fulfill their requirement.

Depending on which year you join the Audiophiles, the number of terms you must spend in choir changes. They can be completed whenever you wish, as long as you get them done before you graduate. This is with the exception of Freshmen, who must complete 2 terms of their requirement in their first year. The terms required are as follows:

Join as a Freshman: 6 terms

Join as a Sophomore: 4 terms

Join as a Junior: 2 terms

Join as a Senior: 1 term

In order to “complete a term” you must be in good standing attendance for that term. More specifics are outlined in the Choral Association constitution. You should anticipate needing to attend all choral rehearsals to be in good standing. Typically, each group meets for 1.5 hours a week plus performances. For a person fulfilling their CA requirement, this would mean that they should expect to be in choral rehearsal for 3 hours every week in addition to a cappella rehearsal.

If you are a member of an instrumental ensemble, the expectations of you are slightly different. Let us know if you have specific questions.

Choir is a great place to make friends and get involved early on. It may seem like a lot to take on, but all of our members are able to make it work. Makeup rehearsals are offered if you cannot attend a rehearsal. Please contact us if you would like clarification regarding any part of the CA requirement.

What if I don’t get in?

Don’t be afraid to audition again! Our group is looking to fill spaces each year based on part coverage and best fit. Really great singers might just not fulfill our needs for when they audition. If you feel strongly about joining, don’t be afraid to come back!
